THE LARGEST PROVINCE IN BICOL WHERE PILI IS LOCATED – CAMARINES SUR

Among the (6) six provinces of Bicol Region province of Camarines Sur is the largest both by population and land area. A total land area of 526, 682 hectares. Covering the 29.87 percent of the total area of the Bicol. Most of its areas are agriculture as it predominated the biggest land use in terms of land area.

The province is located in the central part of the Bicol Peninsula and the southeastern part of Luzon Island. Known for its history, culture, and natural wonders, CamSur is forsooth a competitive and beautiful province.

According to the official website of the provincial government of Camarines Sur it was in 1569 when the province recorded its first account of discovery and exploration of the Spaniard by Captain Luis Enriquez de Guzman and Fr. Alfonso Gimenez. Further, it was when the known people in history came to Bicol from the Northern part of Luzon to search for hidden resources such as gold, spices, and precious stone. It was also said that it was been proven that early settlers in the province bartered these with Chinese, Arabs, and Indians.

Briefly, it was said that in the latter part of the colonization of the Spaniards in the Philippines, Bicol was divided into two distinct groups: The southern portion, which is comprised of the area south of Camalig (Albay), Sorsogon, Masbate, Catanduanes, and present-day Partido was called Partido de Ibalon. The upper northern portion, comprised of Camalig (Albay) and all towns of Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte or the so-called Partido de Camarines.

Partido de Camarines Sur, in the year 1892 was divided into Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte and united in 1854 to form the Province of Ambos Camarines. But again separated and united. At this time there are few discussions and deliberations that had been conducted until finally separated in the year 1917 by virtue of the Philippine Legislative Act No. 2711.

PILI AS CAPITAL TOWN

Bicol Region specifically Camarines Sur is composed of cross-sectoral development and external influences. Although predominantly the culture of it was mainly originated from Malay, because of the long stay of Spaniards they influenced the culture and way of living of Bicolanos.

Did you know that Naga City was the former capital of Camarines Sur and was founded in 1573? It was formerly known as Nueva Caceres named after a province in Spain that was said to belong to their original five royal cities. This was then designated as the capital until June 6, 1955. Later it was replaced by Pili as the provincial capital by the virtue of the Republic Act or RA 1336.

It was also mentioned that when Pili became the capital of Camarines Sur the edifice such as the Provincial Capitol was initiated to transfer from Naga to Pili by the former governor Juan F. Triviño. Brgy. Palestina was the first chosen place for the transfer of Capitol, however, because of the lack of funds at that time and the government prioritizing other important projects, it had been cancelled. It was later on constructed at Barangay Cadlan, Pili, another barangay in the said municipality.
